Facts & History
|
Opening Year
|
1971 |
| History |
One of the original three resorts to open with the Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971. It was a much smaller resort, with only eight longhouses housing 492 guest rooms. There was one pool (that has since been totally remodeled) and the Luau was on a little stage by the beach. In 1978 a ninth longhouse was built along with a second pool (today's 'Quiet' pool) and Tangaroa Terrace (today has The Neverland Club). A final expansion in 1985 filled in that last area to the East next to the Ticket & Transportation Center. The resort has seen many changes in decor and services - but still remains a tropical oasis along the Southern shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon. For more information, please visit Widen Your World. |
| Beginning in 2001, the Polynesian Resort began a major renovation to all it's facilities. The original Grotto pool was removed and replaced with the Nanea Volcano Pool. A water slide and the underwater Hawaiian music remain, but now there is a zero-entry from the beach. From 2004-2006 the Great Ceremonial House received renovation. New floor tile (stones actually), wall coverings, and decor updated and enhanced the South Seas feel. Pappette Bay Veranda and Coral Isle Cafe were remodeled into Ohana's and Kona Cafe respectively. The stores on the first floor were rearranged and condensed into Bou-Tiki. A Wyland Gallery was added and Captain Cooks received a much needed expansion. In 2006 the guests rooms were updated with modern amenities. |
| Originally called the Polynesian Village Resort until 1985. |
| Rooms renovated in 2006. |
| Design |
Designed by Welton Becket and Associates and constructed by US Steel Realty Development. Innovative for it's time, the primary structures of steel were built on site, while the rooms were built at another location. Once ready, the rooms were slide into place like drawers. Legend has it this was done so for future renovation the old rooms could be pulled out and new rooms slide in. While this is a nice idea, I have my doubts that this was the original plan seeing that they were firmly welded into place and natural settling and Florida's humidity would make it impossible to extract the rooms once in place. |
| Christmastime |
Christmas is rather subdued here in the South Seas. Simple (yet tropically themed) garlands, wreaths and bunting decorate the ceiling and columns. A few small Christmas trees and a Gingerbread Polynesian Village can be found in the Great Ceremonial House. |
